Technique Thursday: How to Prepare a Wood Surface for Painting

Question: I want to apply acrylic paint to a wood surface.  How do I prepare it?

Answer: If the wood is new, sand the piece well and the wipe with a tack cloth to remove dust. If it’s an old piece, you must first clean away and grime. Fill in any cracks with a good wood filler and let dry. Then sand until the surface is smooth, starting with a medium grit and ending with a fine grit sandpaper.

Once your wood is prepared, you can paint directly on the surface with acrylic paint.  If you are covering over an old color, you may want to basecoat with white first – FolkArt Titanium White has great hide and is perfect for this type of basecoating.
