Technique Thursday: Create a Chalkboard Surface with FolkArt Chalkboard Paint

Have you crafted with chalkboard paint before? If you haven’t it’s something you should consider. Chalkboard paint allows you to create a chalkboard writing surface on wood, terra cotta or other materials. FolkArt Chalkboard Paint is great for decorating furniture, party favors or gifts. Below we are going to show you how to create a chalkboard surface.

Lightly sand project surface (if needed).

Base-coat with a FolkArt Acrylic Color. Let Dry. Mask off area where you will apply Chalkboard Paint with tape.

Apply 2-3 coats of FolkArt Chalkboard Paint. Let dry between coats. Peel away tape while paint is wet.

Condition by rubbing entire surface with chalk and erase.
Your surface is now ready to be used. Enjoy!

Make it Monday: Chalkboard Herb Pot

Spring is in full bloom, and that means it is time to get outside into your garden. There are so many flower pots out there to buy, but how about making your own? Try crating this chalkboard herb pot. This fashionable decorative pot is one of the Artsy Clay Pots projects by Cathie and Steve. This pot is very simple to make, and you can write whatever you want on it. Create this pot in several different colors, with several different messages. Your flower garden is sure to be a colorful one, with pots like these inside.

PLAID Supplies

  • Plaid ® Hot Glue Gun Helpers
  • FolkArt ® Chalkboard Paint – Hot Pink, 8 oz.
Other Supplies
Large clay pot
Foam paintbrush
Hot glue gun and glue
Ribbon and trim

Instructions

  1. Working in one direction, paint the clay pot with Chalkboard paint. Allow to dry. Paint a second coat in the opposite direction. Allow to dry. Paint a third coat in the direction you first painted. Allow to dry.
  2. Season the chalkboard paint by rubbing a piece of chalk over the surface. Wipe and clean and you are ready to write a message.Using Hot Glue Gun Helpers and hot glue, glue ribbons and trims around the top of the pot.
