Extreme Glitter on Fabric?

Welcome to another installment of ASK PLAIDIE LADDIE!

Plaidie Laddie, loyal Plaid pooch and one of our blog contributors, wants to answer your most burning painting questions. Every week he’ll pick a question out of his virtual mailbag and answer it (with a little help from me, since he only has paws). This week’s question:

“Dear Plaidie Laddie, I would like to use FolkArt Extreme Glitter to accentuate fabric.  Is this possible?  Will it be washable?” -Gina L. from Virginia

Dear Gina, thank you for your question.  I did a little research (the scientists at Plaid are so busy right now!) and found out that FolkArt Extreme Glitter is not washable – however, if you are not planning on washing your fabric piece, then using Extreme Glitter is perfectly fine.  A great example is this gorgeous wall hanging from Melissa at 100 Billion Stars.  She used fabric to create a wall hanging, and then used Extreme Glitter in certain areas for some “bling” action.

This picture shows more of the detail.  Isn’t it pretty?  Visit Melissa’s blog post here, and if you have any other questions about Extreme Glitter, visit the FAQ’s here.

Sincerely, Plaidie Laddie

Handmade Valentine’s Day Glitter Photo Cube

You still have time to do Valentine’s projects – especially those to give as a gift.  Plaid designer Debbie Saenz created this “wow” photo cube to express your love . . . with glitter!  Photo cubes never go out of style, and actually make a great gift for an anniversary as well as Valentine’s Day.  If you think about it, you don’t even have to put photos in it.  You could also fill it with candy and a sweet message.  Here’s how to make one of your own.

Make It Monday: Glitter Crackle Heart Frame

We’re trying some fun new techniques at Plaid – and since we love sparkle, we’re incorporating FolkArt Extreme Glitter!  With Valentine’s Day coming up, we wanted to create some quick and easy ideas to show your love to family and friends.  We took some Red Extreme Glitter and crackle medium and combined the two to make this pretty crackle heart frame.  That red between the crackle really sparkles!  Here’s how to make a frame just like this one.

Make It Monday: Glittery Heart Centerpiece

I don’t know how you feel, but Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to use glitter.  Nothing says “I love you” better than a little bling!  I like table centerpieces for holidays, and I really like this glittery heart centerpiece by Plaid designer Sherrie Ragsdale.  All the red on the project has been enhanced with FolkArt Extreme Glitter, and it looks so pretty in person.  Extreme Glitter is non-toxic (like all Plaid paints), so the kids can even help you with this one.  Find the complete project instructions here.

New Year’s Eve Candle Centerpiece

As far as I’m concerned, it’s kind of difficult to find good crafty projects for New Year’s Eve; yet it’s nice to have a little something for the occasion, especially if you are having people over.  This candle centerpiece uses several ingredients that you probably have in your craft stash, and it all just comes together in a very posh presentation.  A little FolkArt Extreme Glitter and some FolkArt Metallic paint adds just the fancy touch you need to bring in the new year.  Visit the project instructions here.

Make It Monday: Peace This Holiday Season Sign

I’m in love with gorgeous glitters this holiday season!  I love all the shades of FolkArt Extreme Glitter – although it depends on which project I look at which ones I like best.  It’s constantly changing!  I love the red and greens in this Peace holiday sign by Plaid designer Kirsten Jones.  The peace symbol continues to be all over everything this holiday season . . .

TGIF Project: Glittery Beaded Ornament

I think one of the most gratifying holiday crafts is an ornament.  Typically they aren’t large (unless you are decorating the tree in Rockefeller Plaza), and you can complete one in a few hours at most.  I’ve also seen several fun shapes at the craft store . . . like the one above.  The ornate aspect of the ornament above was achieved with FolkArt Extreme Glitter, gems and some gold ric-rac.  A lot of bling for just a little investment!  Designer Karen Embry made this beautiful ornament, and you can too.  Find the complete instructions here.

Glitter Skeleton Wreath from the Dollar Store

I’m interrupting our reguarly scheduled programming since it’s the week before Halloween. I think we’re all in the Halloween mode, and I had to share a recently completed project with you that I just LOVE. I’m a huge fan of my friend Heather’s blog Dollar Store Crafts, and it’s always a fun challenge to head to my local Dollar Tree and see what I can come up with. I knew I wanted to do something Halloween-related and use FolkArt Extreme Glitter, but besides that, I had no idea what I was doing when I walked into the Dollar Tree. It was SO much fun, and this skull wreath resulted. Here’s how I did it.

Gather These Supplies

Here’s the skull loot. I got a big one too, for $1. Wasn’t sure if Iwould do anything with it. Hey, it’s only $1!

I spray painted everything black outside in a box. Normally I would paint my surface with FolkArt, but in this case it was plastic. I had to spray paint. Don’t forget to spray paint your wreath too.

Once the skull heads were dry, I painted them with black Extreme Glitter. I had a hard time with the brush. . .

So I switched to a small spouncer. MUCH better! The skull heads painted up quickly. Don’t forget to let them dry completely.

For this next step, cut the flower heads off of the plastic stems and discard the stems. Paint each flower petal with your fabric paint. You will need a few coats, so allow to dry between each coat before adding more paint. FolkArt Fabric is pretty thick and has great coverage, so I only had to do a few coats.

Hot glue your flowers all the way around your wreath. Only seven fit – that was just fine.

Add a large dab of hot glue into the middle of each flower, and then press the back of the skull head down. Allow to dry before you hang your wreath.

Can you believe how easy that was? This wreath didn’t take me very long at all, so I went back to my larger skull head and painted it purple . . .

I had already spray painted it black, but I had an idea. Since there was spray paint on the skull head, it was easy to paint over with FolkArt Acrylic.

I used Black AND Purple Extreme Glitter to make a fancy table decoration in addition to my wreath! I’m so happy with my skulls, and the projects were as easy as it gets. I encourage you to give yourself a dollar store challenge with Extreme Glitter, then share what you come up with in the comments!
